How to Type in Avro Keyboard
The ultimate guide to phonetic Bangla typing
Avro Keyboard is the most popular phonetic typing method for Bengali. It allows you to type in English, and it automatically converts the text to Bangla. For example, typing "ami" becomes "আমি". This guide covers the official mappings used in BanglaType lessons.
1. Vowels (Shoroborno)
Vowels are the foundation of Avro typing. Most are intuitive, but pay attention to the case-sensitive ones (Capital vs Small letters).
| Bangla | Key Map | Example |
|---|---|---|
| অ | o | onek (অনেক) |
| আ | a | ami (আমি) |
| ই | i | ilish (ইলিশ) |
| ঈ | Shift+i | Shift+i + d (ঈদ) |
| উ | u | ut (উট) |
| ঊ | Shift+u | Shift+u + rmi (ঊর্মি) |
| ঋ | rri | rritu (ঋতু) |
| এ | e | ek (এক) |
| ঐ | Shift+oi | Shift+oi + kko (ঐক্য) |
| ও | Shift+o | Shift+o + jon (ওজন) |
| ঔ | Shift+ou | Shift+ou + shodh (ঔষধ) |
2. Consonants (Banjonborno)
Consonants often have multiple mappings. We've listed the standard ones used in our lessons. Note that Shift is used for many "heavy" sounds (like 'Th', 'Dh', 'Bh').

3. Vowel Signs (Kar)
Vowel signs are typed after the consonant. Here are the exact keystrokes used in our practice lessons.

4. Juktoborno (Conjuncts)
In Avro, you don't need a special "Link" key. Just type the consonants consecutively, and they will automatically join. Here are some common examples from our database.
Pro Tip: The 'o' Vowel
In Bangla, consonants often have an inherent "o" sound. In Avro, you sometimes need to type 'o' explicitly to complete a character or stop a conjunct from forming, but often it's automatic.
- k + l = ক্ল (kl) (Conjunct forms automatically)
- k + o + l = কল (kol) (Adding 'o' breaks the conjunct)
- m + o + t + o = মত (moto)
